Bomb technicians say bottle found in Eudora mailbox contained ingredients for explosive device
The Olathe bomb squad has detonated a bottle filled with a hazardous substance after it was found Thursday afternoon in a mailbox at a home on the corner of Maple and Fir streets.
The Eudora Fire department, Lawrence-Douglas County Fire and Medical and Lawrence-Douglas County Fire and Medical Hazardous Materials Team responded to the call at 2:30 p.m. after a mail carrier reported the bottle to the Eudora Police Department.
Eudora Police Chief Greg Dahlem said officials believed a plastic Dr Pepper bottle filled with a green liquid was placed in the mailbox. The mailbox was located at the street, not on the home.
The residents of the house were not home during the incident.
Officials removed the bottle from the mailbox and sealed it in a five-gallon container.
Just before 5 p.m., a small explosion, sounding like a cap gun, could be heard.
Bomb technicians on the scene said the two-liter bottle contained a mix of Liquid Drano and aluminum foil, which can be mixed to create an explosive device.
Dahlem said the incident still is under investigation.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the Eudora Police Department at (785)-542-3121.

Point of View
What do you think about a proposed ban on smoking in public places such as restaurants, bars and workplaces?
As much as I hate government interfering with our lives, I love the smoking ban. Going out in Lawrence is so nice without smelling cigarette smoke at your table while eating.
Question of the week
A group organized for the purpose of promoting and supporting fatherhood by raising awareness of the value of fathers in Douglas County is being formed. It hasn’t been named. Which name would appeal most to you?
