Paul Heitzman, Eudora, set a new American 5K record in the 65 to 69 age group at the U.S. Senior Sports Classic VI in Tucson, Ariz. Heitzman’s time was 17 minutes 38 seconds. The old record was 18:00, set in 1993 by Joe Fernandez of Fairhaven, Mass.
• Ryan Fulks returned from an 11-day religious pilgrimage to Portugal, Spain and France. While there, Fulks visited Fatima, the site where an apparition of the Blessed Mother was seen in 1917; the Eiffel Tower; the Arc de Triomphe; and Lourdes, France, where another apparition was seen.

• After five days of season play, the Kaw Valley All Stars accumulated a 4-0 record for play in the Senior Babe Ruth and Connie Mack leagues.
The team was coached by Mike and Rick Caldwell. Eudora team members were David Smith, Gary Wilson, Gary Scott, Mike Katzfey and Don Durkin. Others on the team were from De Soto, Gardner, Shawnee, Spring Hill, Kansas City, Bonner Springs and Lenexa.

The entire farming community from Eudora to the Union Pacific tracks was under water. Carl Neis and George Broers estimated between 500 and 600 acres of crops in Weaver Bottoms were completely destroyed.
