June 5, 2009

Lawrence will be the place for the Kansas State Harley Owners Group 2009 rally this weekend, but other events also are planned for area motorcycle enthusiasts.

The Alliance Against Family Violence in Leavenworth County will sponsor the fourth annual Save the Innocence Poker Bike Run on Saturday, and Cornerstone Family Worship in Tonganoxie will sponsor a bike show and recognition rally on Sunday.

Saturday’s event will start with registration at 9 a.m. and departure at 10 a.m. from Cyclones, 610 Cherokee St. in Leavenworth.

Stops will be made at Mueller’s, 120 S. Second St. in Atchison; Stinky’s, 305 Jefferson St. in Oskaloosa; Slow Ride Roadhouse, 1350 N. Third St. in Lawrence; and Helen’s Hilltop, 19611 McLouth Road in Tonganoxie. Proceeds benefit Victim Services, and will help in instances of sexual abuse, stalking, domestic violence and child abuse in Leavenworth County. For more information, visit aafv.net or call (913) 682-8979.

Sunday’s fourth annual Cornerstone Family Worship Bike Show and Recognition Rally will start at 9 a.m. at Cornerstone Family Worship Church, 128 E. Sixth St. in Tonganoxie.

The event will recognize bikers’ contributions to charities and honor military veterans. It includes a 100-mile afternoon ride, free lunch and several door prizes, as well as prizes for first, second and third places in stock and custom classes.

Registration is free and will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. People’s choice judging will be 10 to 10:30 a.m.

Point of View

What do you think about a proposed ban on smoking in public places such as restaurants, bars and workplaces?

As much as I hate government interfering with our lives, I love the smoking ban. Going out in Lawrence is so nice without smelling cigarette smoke at your table while eating.
