Girls state basketball team unites town
We hope that our readership Thursday is sharply down. We hope that’s the case because many of our readers left early to watch the Eudora Cardinal girls play Concordia in the 4A State Tournament in Salina.
Eudora High School has enjoyed success in sports in recent years, regularly earning playoff spots in football, a state runner-up finish in baseball, state finishes in track, a state championship in volleyball and had teams and individuals qualify for state is softball, wresting and cross country. But this is the first state basketball team in this decade. What makes it especially sweet is the girls team’s near misses the past two years and in 2004. The girls persisted, got better and finally won their sub-state.
State trips are special times for small towns as the community joins together to root on the daughters, granddaughters, nieces, cousins and neighbors on the team, sometimes all but abandoning the town to make the trek to the tournament site. We hope that’s the case this week.
Eudora residents may not agree on who should be elected to the Eudora City Council, school board or be the next mayor, but they can agree on one thing. The Cardinal girls deserve support and have done the community proud.
It’s not the most happy of times, and it will be pleasant to rally around the team.
