September 1997

Jill Becker and Bryan Hermreck were chosen by the Eudora High School student body as 1997 Homecoming queen and king.

• Eudora High School graduate and WVLT-TV Chief Meteorologist Rick Katzfey of WVLT-TV in Knoxville, Tenn., was invited to join a select number of meteorologists and scientists from around the country for briefings on climate change issues at the White House. He met President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore.

Following the meeting, Katzfey did a live broadcast from the White House lawn during WVLT News.

•Sarah Slankard, daughter of Dan and Teresa Slankard, and Kelby Foos, son of Randy and Debbie Foos, carried the crown and flower bouquets during the Homecoming ceremony.

•Judy Niebaum was nominated for Kansas Teacher of the Year for 1998 and was honored at a reception in Overland Park. Niebaum was the Title One Coordinator and teacher at Eudora West Elementary School.

The city council accepted a recommendation from the planning commission for a change of zoning for Dr. Kenneth Holladay and pharmacist Stan Byrne's locations at 101 W. 10th St., allowing Dr. Holladay to add an X-ray room to the medical clinic.

The zoning change was from General Business to Central Business.

•Gerald E. Watkins, 19, Eudora, was sentenced to one year in jail on a misdemeanor count of desecrating a cemetery.

Watkins pleaded no contest and was found guilty of the charge, which stemmed from the Aug. 6 vandalism spree at the Holy Family Catholic Church in which tombstones were defaced, knocked over, and crosses broken from the tops.

Rick Hall, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Dean Hall and a junior at Eudora High School, was selected as a 1974 Babe Ruth Baseball Athlete of the Year.

third quarter as Mike Becker made both touchdowns with 11-yard and six-yard runs. Tom Snyder and Daniel L'Ecuyer each added a two-point conversion.

Leland Lawson was elected Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop No. 64. His assistants were Ralph Schmidt and the Rev. Karl Baur. Boy Scout committee members were Allen Westerhouse, chairman, William Mercier, Ray Long, John Kazmaier and Alf Oleson.

•Jack Lee McCabria, a junior, was listed on the engineering honor roll at KU.

•Eddie Grosdidier, Eudora, was among 85 men in training with Coach Carnie Smith at Pittsburg State College for a place on the 1949 football team. He was a member of the squad chosen by Smith from an original group of 110 men who reported for practice.

•Officers of the Parent-Teachers' Association were Mrs. Richard Erwin, president; Mrs. Clarence Daugherty, vice president; and Miss Gladys Swan, secretary and treasurer.

•Henrietta Schubert entertained the members of the Iota Phi Phi club and their husbands and friends to a card party at her home on Main Street.
