Runners ready for league meet
The Eudora Cardinal cross country team will find out just how fast it is Thursday at the Frontier League meet at the Rim Rock course in Lawrence.
The Frontier League, arguably the best 4A conference in the state, features the No. 1 and 2 girls teams in Baldwin and De Soto as well as several ranked boys squads.
“This will be a great competition,” Eudora cross country coach Paul Boone said. “They just don’t hand out all-league honors. We’re going to have to earn them.”
Boone said the aforementioned honors were in sight for several Cardinal runners.
“Our boys team is training really well,” he said. “I’ve been impressed with their mental toughness, their lunch-pail mentality. The guys are developing an identity.”
Ivan Espinosa is one of the boys who Boone anticipates can make some noise at the league meet.
“Ivan ran really well at the Gardner meet,” he said. “He’s looking to prove he’s an all-league guy.”
Boone said while his girls squad lacks experience, he knows his girls are talented.
“Kaya Riemann, I’m expecting a really strong race from her,” Boone said. “We’re pretty inexperienced on the girls side, and we’re working through some things. But I’m still expecting them to do well.”
In addition to the mental toughness the Cardinals have, another crucial thing going for them is they are healthy.
“I think we’re in good shape,” Boone said. “We have some kids who have been working through some nicks and pains, but they’ve taken care of themselves well.”
Boone added the Cardinals were excited to get a crack at the Rim Rock course for the first time this year.
“It’s a fantastic course,” he said. “It’s one of the premier courses in the Midwest. It’s a pretty tough course, but it’s very aggressive. We love competing out there.”
