For the second game in a row, the Eudora defense pitched a shutout. And with two more tough road games Friday at Ottawa and next week at Paola, the Cardinals are hoping their defense holds strong.

In Eudora’s 27-6 win Friday at De Soto, the defense allowed just 127 total yards in the game, despite the fact that the Cardinal defense was on the field for most of the first half due to three Eudora turnovers. But Eudora got the offense going in the second half, which also gave the defense time to rest.

“We played better in the second half and got some things figured out and made some adjustments,” Eudora coach Gregg Webb said. “And our defense shut them out. So we’re pleased with our defense. There’s a couple things we didn’t do well, like lining up and understanding formation, things like that.”

Caleb Clayton-Molby had 15 tackles and Boomer Mays had 11. Tanner Byrne recorded two sacks and Hawley Montgomery had one. Webb credited some of Eudora’s sacks to good coverage in the secondary. Eudora’s defensive backs also knocked down several deep passes by De Soto, and Evan Cleveland and Brian Katzfey both recorded interceptions.

“We have probably knocked down more passes this year that are bombs than all of last year combined twice,” Webb said.

Eudora will put its defensive play to the test again on the road as it plays Ottawa Friday and next week at Paola.

“Both those games will be tough,” Webb said. “Ottawa’s better, much improved. And them playing Paola 17-3, that’s a good deal for them and not for us necessarily. I want them to be terrible. But both those games will be difficult games. They’re winnable games, but we’ve got to be way sharper early than we were today.”
