Group to help Haiti
Eudora residents are looking for volunteers from throughout Douglas County to assist with an event during which they hope to package 300,000 meals for victims of the Haiti earthquake.
Becky Sasse, a Eudora resident and an event organizer, said she and some friends came up with the idea after attending a similar event in El Dorado.
“I really felt like I wanted to do something when this opportunity came up,” Sasse said. “I wanted to do something hands-on.”
The event, Kaw Valley Feeding Haiti, is scheduled for March 6-7 at Eudora Elementary School, 801 E. 10th St. Volunteers may assist by showing up between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on March 6 and between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on March 7.
The residents are working with Numana, an international hunger relief organization. The charity works with the Salvation Army to deliver the meals to Haiti. Sasse said Numana has sponsored similar events across the state. Meals consist of rice, dried soy protein, dried vegetables and chicken flavoring.
The group is also looking to raise $90,000 to help pay for the costs of the meals. People interested in donating may contact Sasse by calling 550-9739.
