- Although Daniel’s BBQ owner Daniel Hipsher grew up around the barbecue business, he had never participated in any barbecue competitions. But about six years ago when a friend had a member quit his barbecue team, he called Hipsher who at the time managed Daniel’s in Tonganoxie. Hipsher joined and the team received a perfect score in ribs at Kansas Speedway. He has been hooked ever since, taking part in about 20 competitions per year.

What do you think about a proposed ban on smoking in public places such as restaurants, bars and workplaces?
As much as I hate government interfering with our lives, I love the smoking ban. Going out in Lawrence is so nice without smelling cigarette smoke at your table while eating.
