It wasn’t supposed to work this way. The $1.4 million spent on improvements to Main Street between Sixth and 10th streets was supposed to lead to more foot traffic and a more attractive setting that might draw businesses to downtown Eudora. But in the months since the project has finished, Curves, Cutter’s Smokehouse and Coffee Talk have left.

Although Daniel’s BBQ owner Daniel Hipsher grew up around the barbecue business, he had never participated in any barbecue competitions. But about six years ago when a friend had a member quit his barbecue team, he called Hipsher who at the time managed Daniel’s in Tonganoxie. Hipsher joined and the team received a perfect score in ribs at Kansas Speedway. He has been hooked ever since, taking part in about 20 competitions per year.
