Hardware store closing due in part to lack of housing starts

Unless nine homes are built before Dec. 31, it will be the fifth time in the last six years that new housing starts have decreased from year to year. The lack of new homes have spelt doom for Durkin’s Hardware, which will close its doors by the end of October. The store will be the fifth to have closed in Eudora during the last year.

Downtown losing businesses

It wasn’t supposed to work this way. The $1.4 million spent on improvements to Main Street between Sixth and 10th streets was supposed to lead to more foot traffic and a more attractive setting that might draw businesses to downtown Eudora. But in the months since the project has finished, Curves, Cutter’s Smokehouse and Coffee Talk have left.

Chamber sets forum schedule

The Eudora Chamber of Commerce mapped out a number of chamber-sponsored events for the first half of the year, with the first of which being candidate forums. The forums will take place at 7 p.m. March 24 and 26 at Eudora City Hall, 4 E. 7th St.
Coffee Talk named 2008 business of year

There was a look of frozen shock on the faces of Coffee Talk owners David and DeeAnn Alvarez Saturday night when they were named the Eudora Chamber of Commerce’s Business of the Year for 2008. “We were surprised and not expecting it at all,” DeeAnn said.
