City council approves 2009 budget

The Eudora City Council Monday approved Monday the city’s 2009 budget. Cuts were made in several areas in order to raise the mill levy by 2.5 mills instead of four mills. Total expenditures will be $10,960,594.
Council moves closer to wall repair

The Eudora City Council on Monday unanimously approved a resolution declaring the retaining wall in the 700 block of Main Street unsafe and dangerous after a public hearing. The resolution directed the owners of the wall to repair the structure and make it secure within 30 days. If they fail to do so, the city would condemn the wall, make repairs and charge the owners.

The City Council made no decisions during a study session for the 2009 budget Thursday. They will meet again Thursday to further discuss the budget before public hearings, which will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the City Council meeting in Eudora City Hall.
City to raise sewage rates

Eudora residents will see an increase in the cost of sewage within the next two months as a result of upgrades that need to be made to the wastewater system. According to the results of a wastewater report by BG Consultants, the system cannot handle flows during peak times. One of the ways that problem will be alleviated is through the wastewater lagoon and headworks project, which will cost about $1.2 million. The City Council on Monday gave permission for BG to put the project out for bids.

Eudora City Council members decided to set aside time at a budget meeting Monday to discuss the city’s role in the purchase of the Durr House. Earlier this month, the council discussed the possibility of purchasing the 109-year-old home and transforming the homestead of three generations of the Durr family into a historical museum and headquarters of the Eudora Chamber of Commerce.

he Eudora City Council Monday approved Monday a resolution to condemn the Main Street wall. The city must acquire a certified record of ownership and then place public notices in the newspaper for two weeks. A hearing will occur June 23 and the owners will have 30 days to appeal the decision. After the appeals process is finished, the city will be able to make changes to the wall. The whole process should be finished between August and September.
