City feels budget crunch

Eudora City Administrator Cheryl Beatty presented city council members with a tough choice at a budget workshop last week. The council could raise the mill levy four mills for 2009 or limit the mill levy increase to two mills and cut jobs or programs, the city administrator said.

Eudora City Council members decided to set aside time at a budget meeting Monday to discuss the city’s role in the purchase of the Durr House. Earlier this month, the council discussed the possibility of purchasing the 109-year-old home and transforming the homestead of three generations of the Durr family into a historical museum and headquarters of the Eudora Chamber of Commerce.
Condemnation hearing set for Main St. wall

Condemnation process begins for wall

he Eudora City Council Monday approved Monday a resolution to condemn the Main Street wall. The city must acquire a certified record of ownership and then place public notices in the newspaper for two weeks. A hearing will occur June 23 and the owners will have 30 days to appeal the decision. After the appeals process is finished, the city will be able to make changes to the wall. The whole process should be finished between August and September.

The downtown Eudora revitalization project will go out for bids at the beginning of May. Meanwhile, the wall located between 706 and 714 on Main Street still sits barricaded and untouched. However, its fate soon could be determined as the city council will decide Monday whether it should condemn the cracked, drooping edifice.

The Eudora City Council unanimously approved Monday a request to advertise bids for the downtown revitalization project. Advertising for bids will begin April 1 and bidding will close May 1. Construction for the project is set to begin June 1 and finish Sept. 12.
