A recent survey of Kansas business owners and operators indicates considerable optimism about the direction of the state’s economy. Today, 55 percent of Kansas business leaders polled think that the state’s economy is headed in the right direction and the growing optimism is in all geographic areas of the state.

My recent trip to Washington, D.C. was disheartening this time. We were told at the annual team leader meeting for CureSearch/National Childhood Cancer Foundation that the National Cancer Institute has again cut funding across the board another 20 percent.

Several weeks ago I appointed Jeff Peterson to fill the vacant city council seat left open with the resignation of Councilman Kevin Miller. Following that appointment Councilman Bill Whitten indicated to the press that he believed the appointment was not done properly. Therefore, I requested and obtained a legal opinion from Lathrop & Gage, our city legal advisors.
