Tech classes help students plan future

Via its technical education center, Eudora USD 491 long has provided high school students with the opportunity to explore career options that don’t always require a degree from a four-year college. The district has now brought the ability to discover those options to eighth-graders at Eudora Middle School with four exploratory technical education classes.
Eudora ACT scores rise

Composite ACT scores for Eudora USD 491 class of 2008 improved upon the scores of the class of 2007. The class of 2008 had an average composite score of 22.4, while the class of 2007 had an average composite score of 22.
USD 491 breaks ground for EMS expansion

The Eudora USD 491 Board of Education followed the awarding of $2.2 million in bids last Thursday for the expansion of Eudora Middle School with a groundbreaking ceremony for the project the next day.

USD 491 approves budget

The Eudora USD 491 Board of Education voted Thursday to approve the budget for the 2008-2009 school year. The district will keep the promise it made to taxpayers during last years’ bond issue campaign by leaving the mill levy flat at 66.350, compared to last year’s rate of 66.530.
Teachers’ food drive a success

The Eudora National Educational Association started the school year on a positive note by having a food drive for the Eudora Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry Thursday at the Cardinal Kickoff, the first official day of work for teachers.
Eudora’s Healzer named Kansas DARE officer of year

Eudora school resource officer Ryan Healzer received recognition in May from Kansas Attorney General Stephen Six for implementing the DARE Plus program at West Elementary School. Now comes news that Healzer has been named Kansas DARE officer of the year. Not bad for his first year.
USD 491 not bogged down by wetlands

The Eudora USD 491 Board of Education elected to turn a possible negative into a positive during a special meeting Thursday. After the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers designated .88 located in the northeastern corner the 46-acre site of the new elementary school as wetlands, the board voted to do a combination of on and offsite mitigation that will save a portion of the wetlands and allow the ecosystem to be used in an educational manner.
New assistant principal already feels at home

Shelley Dougherty had lived in Russell for most of her life. She grew up there, she had been an elementary school principal for 20 years there and she raised her family there. But despite working and living in a community she describes by using words such as “incredible” and “fabulous,” she still felt it was time to move on.

The board approved the preliminary budget for the 2008-2009 school year Thursday, which estimated the mill levy at 66.350, compared to last year’s rate of 66.530.
USD 491 receives $3 million grant

New Eudora USD 491 Superintendent Don Grosdidier had a great second day on the job when the district received a four-year, $3 million grant Wednesday from the U.S. Departments of Education, Justice and Health and Human Services. The grant was part of $74 million in grants awarded to 27 different states as part of the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative. USD 491 was the only school district in the state of Kansas to receive the grant.
KU honors USD 491 teachers

The School of Education at Kansas University honored EHS Assistant Principal and Technical Education Center Director Ron Abel, EHS and EMS family science teacher Peggy Claggett, EHS science teacher Bonnie Daigh and EMS Athletic Director and physical trainer Phil Katzenmeier with certificates recognizing 25 years or more of service to education in Kansas.
