Moleta Ruth Schmidt 1914 - 2008

Graveside inurnment services for Moleta Ruth Schmidt, 93, rural Baldwin City, were Saturday, March 29, in Vinland Cemetery.
Mrs. Schmidt died Sunday, March 23, 2008, at Baldwin Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born June 15, 1914, in Eudora, the daughter of John F. Sr. and Ruth C. Davis Laughlin. She graduated from Vinland High School in 1932 and received a lifetime teaching certificate in 1940. She later received a bachelor's degree in education from Emporia State University in 1967.
Mrs. Schmidt was a lifelong educator in rural schools in Douglas County and taught in Prospect, Clinton and Pleasant Valley schools. She retired from the Baldwin school district in 1981 after 32 years at Vinland Elementary.
She was an active member of Vinland Church of Christ and taught vacation Bible school for many years. She was a member of the Emporia State University Alumni Association; Douglas County Retired Teachers Association, where she served as secretary from 1983 to 1986 and as treasurer from 1990 to 1993; and the Baldwin Branch of the American Association of University Women, where she served as secretary from 1986 to 1988 and 1991 to 1992 and served as treasurer from 1995 to 1997. She also served on the Douglas County Judicial Committee from 1981 to 1987.
Mrs. Schmidt volunteered as a 4-H project leader in reading and poultry for the Vinland Valley 4-H Club and in the grandparents reading program in the Baldwin school district. She served as superintendent of the canning department at the Vinland Fair for many years. She enjoyed gardening, canning and growing flowers.
She married Alvin N. Schmidt on June 14, 1945, in Ottawa. He died in 1969.
Survivors include a son, Floyd and wife Sue, Baldwin City; a brother, Paul Laughlin and wife Maxine, Tahlequah, Okla.; a sister, Shirley Harsin, Topeka; two grandchildren, John P. Schmidt and Amy L. Schmidt-Cowardin; and two great-grandchildren, Maxwell Henry and Hugo Neville Cowardin.
