Leona "Lee" Mae Haney 1915 - 2008

Funeral services for Leona "Lee" Mae Haney, 92, Eudora, were Sunday, Feb. 24, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary, Eudora Chapel. Graveside services were Monday, Feb. 25, in Eudora Cemetery.
Mrs. Haney died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
She was born Sept. 1, 1915, in Linn, the daughter of John Edward Simmons and Libby Maple Stegman Simmons. She attended school in Washington, Kan., and graduated from high school in Clifton in 1933. She attended Kansas State College.
Mrs. Haney taught at a school in rural Palmer. She worked as a seamstress in Nebraska during World War II and also worked for Andrew Bokious in Manhattan. She retired as a Kansas Social Welfare worker in 1979. She and her husband owned Haney's Hobbies for more than 40 years.
She was a 50-year member of Kansas Order of Eastern Star, worthy matron and District 8 aide and Eudora Golden Age Club. She was a past member of White Shrine, Quindaro 40 & 8, Eagles Auxiliary Ritual Team and Douglas Council of Aging.
She was a past president of Eudora American Legion Auxiliary, Quindaro American Legion Auxiliary and Eagles Auxiliary Aerie 309.
Mrs. Haney enjoyed teaching ceramics to school children and adults and had many students in Eudora.
She also enjoyed working with children, serving her community, attending International Eagles Conventions, Eagles REAC, Eudora Golden Age, Helianthus Club, Eudora Historical Society and accompanying her daughter on many trips.
She married Jesse L. Haney on May 7, 1944, in Ellsworth. He died March 4, 1985.
She also was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Keith and Glenn; a sister, Helen Ross; a foster brother, Alfred Wineholt; a son-in-law, John May; and a grandson, Kevin May.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Ellen May, Eudora; a granddaughter; and four great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to the Sadie May Educational Fund, sent in care of the Warren-McElwain Mortuary Eudora Chapel, 1003 John L. Williams Drive, Eudora 66025.
