A fortnight of insomnia

Census shows little growth
July 17, 2008
Last year before releasing its annual population estimate update, the U.S. Census Bureau readjusted figures from the recent past in an attempt to reflect Eudora’s recent population spike. The result was an estimated increase in the city’s population of 1,031 residents from 4,901 to 6,022. No such adjustment was needed in this year’s figures — which estimated growth from July 1, 2006, to June 30, 2007 — ensuring Eudora’s growth would look far less impressive.

The Eudora school district is urging students and parents to give themselves extra time when school starts with the traffic light directing one lane of traffic over the Church Street/Kansas Highway 10 overpass.

New home construction such as this work in the Meadowlark subdivision has been rare in recent years. With the decline in new home starts from triple digits earlier this decade to single digits the past two years, Eudora's population increases have fallen off as well. Still, a U.S. Census Bureau update released last week estimates the city grew by 55 residents from July 1, 2006, to June 30, 2007.

Eudora City Administrator Cheryl Beatty said the lack of development in the city in the past year increased mill levy pressure on the 2009 budget.

Construction is to start on the Church Street overpass off Kansas Highway 10 in late July and continue through September.
