Tafanelli beats McNeill for shot at 47th District House seat

August 3, 2000

Lee Tafanelli, Ozawkie, defeated Ken McNeill, Perry, in Tuesday's Republican primary. Tafanelli, 39, will now face either Lana Leach or Bruce Hanson in November's general election for the Kansas House of Representatives 47th District seat.

"We're real excited," he said. "From the numbers, it seems that we're reaching the people."

Tafanelli said even though he won the primary election, there was still a lot to be accomplished.

"We still have a lot of work that needs to get done through November in the campaign," he said. "We want to continue to get out and meet people in the district and listen to the issues that are important to them."

He said in the next few months he wanted to concentrate on the issues that concerned him before the primary including the quality of education, lower taxes and less government involvement in the lives of Kansas residents.

In a recent Eudora News interview Tafanelli said he wanted the government to become more accountable for its actions.

"We need to start running government like businesses in a smart, responsible manner," he said.

He said he also wanted to provide more money toward education, salaries and technology to help improve Kansas schools.

"The future belongs to our children, and I really think if we provide a quality education we can attract better businesses," he said. "I think it's not necessarily in terms of (the) quality issue, in all cases, I think more money is better. Overall, I would probably support increased funding per pupil where those areas are growing."
