Harris and Becker earn medals in Wichita

Senior heavyweight Robert Collins took the gold medal and led his team to a 10th place finish. Junior Brian Harris finished fourth, while Brett Becker, another junior, finished fifth. Eudora took eight grapplers to the state tourney. Here is a look at how each fared in Wichita:

Board facing tough decision on high school

Five years later, Eudora is again on the verge of outgrowing its high school. Plans are in the works for a new high school to be built in the near future. A bond issue to fund the new school’s construction would have to be approved by voters. Until that happens, Eudora continues to grow and the existing high school site strains to keep up.

Heavyweight Robert Collins was invincible on his way to the top of the Class 4A tournament Saturday at the Kansas Coliseum in Wichita with a 12-3 major decision over Chaparral’s Matt Helms, completing a perfect senior season at 35-0.

The city went to 24-hour policing about 3 years ago. There are usually two officers on duty quite a difference from the not-so-distant past when Eudora fell under the jurisdiction of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department during the wee hours of the morning.

Eudora’s 61-39 Class 4A sub-state quarterfinal loss to top-seeded Kansas City-Piper, 15-6, didn’t come easily to the Pirates. The Cardinals battled but fell to a better team.

Last weekend, eight athletes represented Eudora on a statewide stage in Wichita. Led by heavyweight Robert Collins, who wrapped up an unbeaten senior season by winning a Kansas Class 4A title, the Cardinals compiled 58 points good enough for a top-10 finish in the team tournament.

Officials have hopes for funding of K-10 projects

Eudora city officials are hoping that state money will get Eudora a new K-10 exit and improve the city’s two existing K-10 interchanges. Officials have pleaded their case, and now it’s up to the state on how it chooses to spend more than a billion dollars tabbed for transportation over the next decade.
