Eighth-grade varsity

The Eudora Middle School eighth-grade varsity squad put forth a good effort Monday night, chalking up its second win against Wellsville, 62-37, in the Cardinal Dome.

Bryant and Dustin Deathe worked hard on the inside making it difficult for Wellsville to score down low, while Cole Massey, Travis Spring, Paul Smith and Tyler Hartpence kept pressure on Wellsville's perimeter.

Bryant led the scoring with 20. Deathe finished with nine. Massey and Brendan Jackson scored 8 each. Brandon Helm had six, and Rod Evinger ended with five.

The team kept up with the undefeated Osawatomie team Jan. 18 at EMS until the fourth quarter, but fell behind with a final score of 41-28.Bryant was leading scorer with 14 points.

Seventh-grade varsity

Wellsville visited EMS Monday night to face the seventh-grade varsity squad.

It was a battle from the beginning to the end. The Cardinals trailed by 3 points at halftime.

In the second half, the Cards could not close the gap and fell by a score of 38-34. The varsity record is 3-5.

The team dropped one to Anderson County Jan. 25 when it traveled to Garnett to take on the Bulldogs.

EMS trailed by six points at halftime. Nolan Smith came out in the third quarter and hit two quick buckets to help the Cards fight back and take a two-point lead, but the Bulldogs claimed the win in a close one, 39-37.

In the win column, the Cards defeated Osawatomie Jan. 18 in front of a hometown crowd.

The Cards held a small lead for most of the first three quarters. Osawatomie grabbed the lead briefly in the fourth, but EMS answered back in the last minutes of the game.

The Trojans had a chance to tie in the last 30 seconds, but good defense by the Cards gave EMS a 36-34 win.

Mark Abel led scoring with 10 points. Miles Cleveland and Ryan Pittman finished with five each. Luke Abel and Austin Calhoon had four apiece. Kyle Reynolds, Kyle Brouhard, Smith and Rodney Spillman each scored two.

Eighth-grade junior varsity

The eighth-grade junior varsity Cardinals team failed to score in the last quarter against Osawatomie Jan. 18 and allowed the Trojans to close a 17-point gap, but the local team held out and came away with its third straight win, 29-22.

Leading the Cards in scoring were Derin Stewart and Mark Shutt with 6 points each. Josh Barr had five. Joe Faulk, Craig Elmer and Jesse Hardwick finished with four apiece.

Seventh-grade junior varsity

The EMS junior varsity squad faced the Wellsville Eagles Monday night and came away with a 49-20 win.

The boys ran well against Wellsville's press, breaking it easily with good ball movement and getting easy shots under the basket.

Ray Ramirez led the team in scoring with 17 points. Guy Montgomery had 10. Kyle Cox and Chris Wolford had 8 apiece. Chanze Johnson finished with six.

The squad traveled to Anderson County Jan. 25 and chalked up a 17-9 win over the Bulldogs.

Tim Moran led all scoring with 13 points. Caleb Krenger and Kyle VanMeter each added two.
