Services for Jo Leon, 66, Lawrence, were Monday, Feb. 12, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Graveside services were Tuesday at Gate (Okla.) Cemetery.
Mrs. Leon died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
She was born Dec. 18, 1934, in Garden City, the daughter of George A. and Jessie (Gilliland) Berends. She earned a bachelor's degree in education with a major in art from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia in 1956, and did graduate work in art at Wichita State University, Southwestern College in Winfield, Fort Hays State University and Kansas University. She moved to Eudora in 1970 and to Lawrence in 1976.
Mrs. Leon had been a substitute teacher in Eudora and had worked in the Central Junior High School library. She also worked with 4-H clubs in Eudora and Lawrence, primarily in arts and crafts, and had served as Douglas County superintendent of arts and crafts for several years. She was instrumental in developing a creative arts and crafts program.
Mrs. Leon was a member of Lone Star Church of the Brethren.
She married Clinton J. Leon on Dec. 27, 1956, in Friend. He survives of the home.
Other survivors include a daughter, Sienna Lynn Leon, Siena, Italy; two sons, Sven Aaron Leon, Portland, Ore., and Lars Eric Leon, Lawrence; a brother, Robert D. Berends, Salem, Ore.; and two grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to Huntington's Disease Society of America, Haskell Athletics H-Club, Douglas County Visiting Nurses Assn., Trinity Respite Care or a charity of the donor's choice, sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, Lawrence.
