Pinecrest to add third phase of apartments
Senior citizens in Eudora will soon have more housing options as construction begins on a third phase of Pinecrest Apartments.
Don Cooper, vice president of operations and development for Commercial Group in Topeka, said demand for senior housing has increased steadily over the years. Commercial Group is the parent company of Pinecrest Apartments.
The first phase of Pinecrest was built nearly 16 years ago and the second phase was built close to eight years ago. He said the complex currently has 60 apartments, all of which are full. With many senior citizens on a waiting list, Commercial Group concluded the market could support additional construction. The new phase will be built near the existing facilities.
"We have a growing and aging population and all the data reflects that," Cooper said. "And, all the people are downsizing and don't need a three- or four-bedroom house anymore."
Cooper said the company expects construction to begin within two weeks. The company is waiting on the city to vacate two alleys that cut through the property. The Eudora City Council has scheduled a public hearing on the matter for 7:30 p.m., March 26 at Eudora City Hall.
The site plan was approved by the Eudora Planning and Zoning Commission Feb. 20.
"We're ready to go," Cooper said. "Eudora's just a really nice community to live in. It's a great location and has good services and good people. It's very typical of a Kansas community. There are a lot of positives to it."
Commercial Group owns 34 properties in Kansas. The third phase at Pinecrest will have one- and two-bedroom apartments. The first two phases have only one-bedroom apartments.
