Prescott A. Ripley


Services for Prescott Allen Ripley, 78, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Plymouth Congregational Church. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Ripley died Monday, April 30, 2001, at his home.

He was born Nov. 5, 1922, in Topeka, the son of Frank Arthur and Stella (Grattan) Ripley. He attended Kansas University, graduated from Washburn University, Topeka, and moved to Lawrence in 1971 from Roeland Park.

Mr. Ripley served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a 20-year volunteer for Audio Reader.

He was a member of Kansans for the Improvement of Nursing Homes; Jayhawk Kiwanis Club; American Legion, Lawrence; Phi Delta Theta fraternity; Douglas County Mental Health Assn.; Audubon Society; Topeka Civic Symphony; Overland Park Civic Symphony; and Lawrence Civic Choir. He was a past member of Topeka Rotary Club.

He was married to Aurora McCormick from 1951 to 1974. He married Janice Howe in 1977 in Las Vegas. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include three daughters, Barbara D. Spry, Aurora, Colo., Linda S. Slankard, Prairie Village, and Janet McKiernon, Columbia, Mo.; three stepdaughters, Barbara J. Babcock, Lecompton, Catherine A. Ramirez, Wichita, and Mary Carol Shipley, Eudora; a stepson, Joseph H. Wettengel, Lawrence; and seven grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to Audio Reader, Visiting Nurses Association or Hospice Care of Douglas County, sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1260, Lawrence 66044.
