Supporters set to raise the roof for wrestling with dinner
Football had its state playoff pep rally, and basketball kicked off with Late Night with the Cards. Now, the wrestling team, which didn't get to perform at Late Night, will get its own morale boost with Raise the Roof Night Feb. 13.
The inaugural event will kick off with a barbecue dinner starting at 4:30 p.m, followed by the tightly contested triangular among Eudora, No. 4 Paola (5A) and No. 9 Baldwin (4A). The Panthers could be on their way to win a third Frontier League title after next Thursday's meet.
"It's big because it's got three big teams," coach Bill DeWitt said. "It's also senior night, and it's our last home meet of the year."
Because of the rivalry, DeWitt said, the meet had usually been a well-attended one.
"Being senior night and the last one of the year, we wanted to have people come out."
The pre-meet dinner costs a $2 minimum donation to the Don Abel Memorial Wrestling Foundation, which helps finance scholarships for Eudora High School seniors.
"If they'll come out for a cheap dinner and watch wrestling, that's great for us," DeWitt said.
Getting people interested in wrestling -- or at least aware of it -- is one hoped-for outcome of Raise the Roof Night.
"A lot of people don't understand the sport, but regardless it doesn't lessen the amount of work those kids put in," DeWitt said. "They need and deserve the recognition. We'd really like to do something special for those kids."
