EHS students earn academic all-star honors
Eudora High School senior Megan Ballock was recently named one of the 10 members of the 2006 Journal-World Academic All-Star team.
Three judges selected the winners from among 40 high school seniors nominated for the newspaper's 10th annual team based on academics, test scores, extracurricular activities, community involvement and an essay written by each on how they would spend $10 million.
The nominees represented 13 high schools: Baldwin, Bishop Seabury Academy, De Soto, Eudora, Free State, Lawrence, McLouth, Oskaloosa, Ottawa, Perry-Lecompton, Santa Fe Trail, Tonganoxie and Wellsville.
The three judges were Tim Bengston, a Kansas University journalism professor; Rand Ziegler, Baker University interim vice president and dean of the college of arts and sciences; and Robert Harrington, KU professor in the Department of Psychology and Research in Education.
Each all-star received a certificate and a backpack.
The 10 winners were Ballock; Eric Anderson, Ottawa High School; Brenna Daldorph and Carly Sakumura, both of Lawrence High School; Boning Zhang and Amanda Frederick, both of Lawrence Free State High School; Lilly Varner, Santa Fe Trail High School; Lynne Lammers, Baldwin High School; Cody Heston, Oskaloosa High School; and Allegra Fisher, Perry-Lecompton High School. They all have 4.0 grade-point averages.
The Journal-World honored the all-stars and their parents Feb. 22 with a luncheon at a Lawrence restaurant.
Eudora High School senior Guy Montgomery was one of the nominees for the all-star team. Both Ballock's and Montgomery's profile are below.
