Freshmen boys spark cross country team
The race could neither have started or finished any worse. Through the course of it, however, it was evident exactly what made the freshmen boys on Eudora's cross country team such an asset.
Juan Ramirez, running in his first state cross country meet, lost his show barley more than 10 percent of the way through the five-kilometer race. He carried on, even racing well, but finished one spot and only several seconds shy of a medal, crossing the line in 21st place.
Ramirez, along with fellow freshman Ivan Espinosa, helped breath new life into the boys cross country team after it appeared it would be crippled with the graduation of 2006 state studs Joey Chino and Cody Burns.
Ramirez and Espinosa helped lead a revival, however, one the squad hopes carries into 2008. The pair led the team in each of the season's races, Espinosa in particular coming on strong prior the grueling regional cross country meet, but they're only the top of what should be an interesting roster in the fall.
Behind the freshmen is a large group of hardworking, talented and young competitors that steadily helped the team to strong finishes at league and regionals. With another offseason to grow stronger and a steadfast goal of making state as a team for the first time in years, the boys cross country team might not just be one of the top stories of 2007 - it might prove to be one of the top in 2008 as well.
