If there’s one thing Kansans have in common, it’s the wind. Nearly everyday whether from south, north or nearly west, it’s there to make us stand straighter and breathe deeper. In the shade, it can make a triple-digit day tolerable. It can make a brisk, sunny winter day beyond miserable.

As we look back through The Eudora News’ archives, the first stories about a future bond issue for Eudora USD 491 ran more than three years ago. At that time, district officials spoke of preparing for a bond issue in what then seemed a distant future.

There were 118 more plays to come, nearly 46 minutes of football, three lead changes, three fourth-down conversions, a safety and a successful onside kick.
Still, the first three plays of Eudora’s 13-8 loss Tuesday at Basehor-Linwood in the opening-round of the Class 4A state tournament spelled doom for the Cardinals.

Judging solely by the records, fans may have arrived in Basehor-Linwood expecting the Eudora Cardinals football team to easily roll past the Bobcats into the second round of the Kansas class 4A playoffs. At 8-1, Eudora was seen as the clear favorite over the 4-5 Bobcats.
The early predictions were proven wrong, however. Basehor won a hard-fought game, upsetting the Cardinals, 13-8 in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs.

A meeting between Eudora city officials and Douglas County Rural Water District No. 4 Board of Directors Oct.24 failed to produce an agreement but did show how far apart the two sides are in a dispute that has spurred a federal lawsuit.

As Nov. 6 approaches, the big issue is the $45 million school bond. However, citizens also will be voting on Charter Ordinance No. 10, which will decide whether or not the mayor, upon approval of the city council, can appoint department heads for two years instead of one year.

Topping the priority for Eudora USD 491’s bond issue is a $26.9 million first- through fifth-grade elementary school and $2.6 million sixth-grade attendance center and other improvements for Eudora Middle School.

Eudora Development Inc., owner of the Eudora Nursing Center since it opened in 1975, has transferred operations to nursing home operator Medicalodges Inc. The transfer of operations will take place Thursday, and transfer of ownership will take place on or before Jan. 31, 2008.

Charter Ordinance 10 was passed by the Eudora City Council in order to help Eudora attract and maintain quality employees. The ordinance moved up the time for appointment and changed the appointment term from one year to two years. The hope is that existing and potential employees would view employment with the city of Eudora as a stable situation, giving Eudora a competitive advantage over cities that use one year appointments.
