EMS 6th-graders donate supplies to Lawrence Humane Society
November 20, 2008
At a time when many people are giving to the needy, Eudora Middle School 6th-grade English teacher DeAnna Thompson and her classes are trying to help those who can’t help themselves.
Her classes have been reading books about animal heroes and the lives of stray dogs, which inspired her and her students to donate supplies to the Lawrence Humane Society.
“There’s animals in there who deserve a good home and some people don’t like them because they’re not all small or cute, but they all deserve good homes,” sixth-grader Lauren Gabriel said.
The project is a cause that is especially close to Gabriel’s heart, as her family recently adopted a German shorthair after the dog’s owner died and the dog had no place to go.
Though it’s not the first time Thompson has had her students read the books, it is the first time she tied in a service project. The fact that the project fell at a time when people are in a giving mood was just a coincidence, thompson said.
Those who would like to donate to the project, you can bring items to the EMS office. To learn more, visit www.lawrencehumane.org for a full list of items needed.

Point of View
What do you think about a proposed ban on smoking in public places such as restaurants, bars and workplaces?
As much as I hate government interfering with our lives, I love the smoking ban. Going out in Lawrence is so nice without smelling cigarette smoke at your table while eating.
Question of the week
A group organized for the purpose of promoting and supporting fatherhood by raising awareness of the value of fathers in Douglas County is being formed. It hasn’t been named. Which name would appeal most to you?
