Chamber offers holiday extravaganza, homes tour

November 12, 2009

For more than 20 years, children have been able to visit Santa at Eudora City Hall.

In recent years, the Eudora Chamber of Commerce has added a few more activities to the event.

This year, the Eudora Holiday Extravaganza will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 5 at Eudora City Hall, 4 E. Seventh St.

In addition to visiting with Santa, the downtown lighting ceremony and singing carols lead by the Eudora High School Choir, there also will be a silent auction for Christmas trees decorated by about 11 businesses.

A portion of the proceeds from the auction will benefit the Angel Tree Fund, which is a gift-giving program for needy families.

The trees will be on display at Durkin’s law office, 702 Main St.

The chamber also has organized a holiday homes tour that will be from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Dec. 5. The tour will feature homes from throughout the area.

Tickets for the self-guided tour are $10 and will come with a map and directions to each home. Proceeds will go to the Eudora Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry.

While chamber President Amy Durkin said the evening’s festivities were to provide a holiday get together for the community, it also was organized to benefit the two charitable causes.

“It was partially to keep people here and create some holiday traditions, but we also wanted to help the food pantry and the Angel Tree Fund,” Durkin said.

Both the homeowners and those touring the homes will be eligible for prizes. Homeowners also can win money if their home is voted one of the top-three favorite homes on the tour. Those touring the homes can bring their ticket to City Hall during the festivities Dec. 5 and they’ll be entered into a drawing for one of two $50 gift certificates donated by C & S Market.

Tickets for the homes tour are available at Mateo Chiropractic, 1402 Church St.; Amy Durkin’s law office, 702 Main St.; Eudora City Hall, 4 E. 7th St.; Heads and Nails Family Salon, 713 main St.; and Byrne’s Pharmacy, 101 10th St.

“It brings a sense of community when we all come together and celebrate this time of year,” Durkin said.
