Eudora schools announce makeup days
Eudora schools will be in session Feb. 21 and April 25 to make up for the abundance of snow days in January and early February, district officials announced Friday.
In addition, minutes will be added to the day at Eudora Middle School and Eudora High School, beginning Feb. 21.
The changes were made based on input from teachers and administrators and were adopted by the Eudora Board of Education at its Feb. 10 meeting.
"Changing the schedules and calendars mid-year is never a perfect solution," said Superintendent Don Grosdidier, "but all the recent snow days have allowed us little other choice."
The state requires school districts maintain a certain number of hours in the school year. The district had figured in approximately two days in the original calendar, but this winter's repeatedly dangerous weather quickly outpaced the budgeted days.
Starting Feb. 21, the EHS schedule will begin 15 minutes earlier — at 8 a.m. — each day, and the EMS schedule will begin five minutes earlier, also at 8 a.m. Lunch periods at EMS will be shortened by five minutes each day, as well. The daily schedule at Eudora Elementary School will remain unchanged, as that school has been attending more minutes each day all year.
The district said parents with extenuating circumstances created by the schedule changes should work with the principal in their child's building to find solutions.
Grosdidier added that additional snow days this year will require the board to take days from spring break or extend the school year. He also said that planning is under way to create a calendar for next year that will better be able to accommodate weather-related school closings.
