Something to celebrate

June 2, 2005

When the woman stood up at (the Eudora High School) graduation and yelled, "Pat, we're here to celebrate" she completely floored the crowd with what can only be termed crassness. I had to wonder if she was fully aware of what all there really was to celebrate.

Let's celebrate the fact that Patrick Everley, a Eudora grad, graduated with honors from the University of Kansas and is now working on his doctorate at Harvard Medical School in cancer research.

Let's celebrate the fact that Patrick cares enough about science and humanity to spend the time doing that research.

Let's celebrate the fact that Patrick loves his career choice and has a genuine passion for finding a cure for cancer.

Let's celebrate the idea that Patrick might well be the one who finds that cure.

Let's celebrate the fact that Patrick cares enough about Eudora High to speak to our graduates all the while missing his younger brother Steven's graduation from KU.

Let us also celebrate the fact that the graduates showed class in giving Patrick Everley a standing ovation.

Hopefully some of those graduates heard his message of the importance of having a love and passion for one's career.

As a teacher, I -- and I'm sure all my colleagues -- know exactly what he means.
