Local youth group puts on show for a good cause
The St. Paul United Church of Christ Youth Group promises to provide an entertaining evening and an inexpensive date this weekend as they perform in "The Main Event."
The variety show will be performed Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Eudora Middle School auditorium. This is the fifth year the group has put on a production, and all the proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Eudora Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry.
"It's grown every year and we're hoping that this year will exceed last year," said youth group leader DeeAnn Howell.
"The Main Event" will include 29 numbers performed by members of the St. Paul United Church of Christ Youth Group and their friends. The songs were choreographed by the kids and their leaders and incorporate many themes, from Broadway to Grand Ol' Opry to American Bandstand.
The song list includes familiar tunes such as "Tomorrow," "Over the Rainbow," "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," "Thank God I'm a Country Boy," "Rockin' Robin" and "Stand By Me."
"They're pretty funny," said cast member Tabitha Welsh of the numbers to be performed Saturday. "It's fun to be a part of."
Welsh has been a participant in the annual production for four years. This year's cast members range in age from 3 years old to college age.
"These kids put in a lot of hard work," Howell said. "We have got the best group of kids anyone could ask for."
The cast has spent two months practicing for the performance and planned to have several dress rehearsals this week, leading up to the show.
Cathy Box has been in charge of props, and Eudora High School students will be running the lights during the performance.
Howell said the event will be a bittersweet her and the other three youth leaders, Darin Howell and Mike and Robyn Kelso, who are in their last year as leaders.
Tickets are $5 per person and can be purchased at the door or by calling 542-3145. Children age 2 and will be admitted for free.
