District Web site welcome
Last week, Eudora USD 491 launched its new Web site. A visit to the site at eudoraschools.org will find calendars, specific information about each school, and (promised soon) school board agendas and minutes, a summary of the district's need for a 2007 bond issue, and much more information for parents, students or others with an interest in the district. The Web site also includes a listserv function that allows updates of district news.
It might be assumed newspapers would find the proliferation of information threatening. We at The Eudora News find the home pages of the local jurisdictions compliment our coverage, while at the same time hold us accountable.
We at the newspaper have come to appreciate the Web sites of other jurisdictions we cover. While never a replacement for required beat work, they are very valuable tools for verifying dates and names and producing story ideas. They can provide primary source materials -- such as meeting minutes -- the newspaper can't afford to provide.
The city of Eudora is without a Web presence, although the city council provided money in the 2007 budget to launch a site next year.
We hope the city effort is given priority with the goal of getting the Web site up closer to January than December. Any opportunity to enhance communication between city government and residents is welcome, especially in a growing city where the planning commission and city council regularly consider issues critical to the future of Eudora.
