Eudora residents are gearing up for the annual EudoraFest, which includes a truck and tractor pull on Sunday at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds in Lawrence.
The rest of the festival will take place next weekend in Eudora.
This year’s festival, on Oct. 2, will include arts and crafts vendors, food vendors, live entertainment, the Miss EudoraFest Pageant, Our Diamond Miss Pageants, a pedal tractor pull, a parade and games for children.
Jean Trout, a local crochet artist, will be participating in the event for the sixth time. Trout taught herself how to crochet and has been making pieces for most of her life. She makes everything from nylon pot scrubbers to crocheted kitchen towels and pot holders. Although Trout has been sewing and knitting for most of her life, she has only been a part of the craft show business for the past 10 or 12 years.
“I can’t stand to just sit in my chair and do nothing,” Trout said. “I have to keep busy.”
The truck and tractor pull, at 1 p.m. Sunday, is a new addition to the fair.
Ron Stone, president of the Flint Hills Truck Pullers Association, helped organize the event. Stone, who also will be a driver, said he grew up around truck pulls and it has been a part of his life ever since. He said he has many fond memories of the track close to his house and the summers spent watching his dad.
“I remember being scared of the Green Monster when I was about 3 or 4,” Stone said. “It had a turbine engine from an airplane, it blew fire and it had a giant green monster painted on the side.”
However, Stone said the flashy paint jobs, macho names, screaming engines, child-size tires and revving horsepower are just part of the experience.
“It’s what draws people out,” Stone said.
Stone will drive a 1979 four-wheel drive Chevrolet pickup in Sunday’s pull. Between 40 and 50 other drivers will participate in the event.
